A Gulf Coast native, Dr. Ashley Emerson grew up in Pascagoula, where she graduated Valedictorian from Pascagoula High School. She first ventured from the Coast to attend college at the University of Mississippi, where she graduated with a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Psychology, with an emphasis on investigational psychopharmacology. She attended medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where she also completed her intern year prior to starting her dermatology training at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, where she was named Chief Resident for her senior year, and she was awarded board certification in 2017. She then returned to UMMC to join the Department of Dermatology as an Assistant Professor, where she had the privilege to participate in resident education in addition to her clinical practice. She served as Attending physician for the Resident continuity clinic, surgery clinic, and cosmetic clinic, and she was awarded with the Excellence in Residency Education award in 2018. While at UMMC, Dr. Emerson established Mississippi’s only Pediatric Dermatology clinic, for which she was given an additional appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, making her the only Dermatologist in the state with this distinction. Together with the Department of Rheumatology, she also founded Mississippi’s first Rheumatology-Dermatology Multidisciplinary clinic in 2019. She also served as the lead Dermatologist for the Multidisciplinary Melanoma clinic from 2017 until her departure from the University. In addition to her many ventures at UMMC, Dr. Emerson also authored a chapter in the 4th Edition of Dr. Stephen Wolverton’s textbook, Comprehensive Dermatologic Drug Therapy.
Dr. Emerson’s passion for Dermatology extends to nearly all aspects of clinical practice, including both surgical and cosmetic dermatology. Her experience with treating more complex dermatological diseases in both adult and pediatric patients has driven a particular interest in skin conditions in the setting of systemic disease.
Outside of Dermatology, Dr. Emerson enjoys playing tennis and spending time with her teacup Yorkie, Tuck. She is happy to be returning home, and Dr. Emerson is excited for the opportunity to join the Dermatology Clinic and provide dermatological care to Gulf Coast residents.
