What is MicroPen EVO?
MicroPen EVO is a professional microneedling device equipped with very fine, sterile needles. During treatment, the device is moved systematically across areas of the scalp where hair has become thinner.
The needles create precise microscopic channels without removing the surface of the skin. This controlled process activates the scalp’s natural healing response and may encourage the release of growth factors involved in skin renewal and follicle support. Research suggests that scalp microneedling may be particularly useful as an adjunct to other treatments for certain forms of hair loss, although results vary and additional research is still needed.
MicroPen EVO scalp microneedling does not involve drawing blood or injecting platelet-rich plasma. PRP injections for the scalp are offered as a separate treatment.
How may scalp microneedling support hair growth?
The controlled microchannels created during treatment stimulate a wound-healing response within the scalp. This process may help support circulation, cellular renewal and the environment surrounding existing hair follicles.
Microneedling may also improve the penetration of certain topical hair treatments when used according to a provider-directed treatment plan. Studies have generally found the strongest results when microneedling is combined with established hair-loss treatments rather than relied upon as a stand-alone solution.
MicroPen EVO cannot restore follicles that are no longer active, and it cannot guarantee new hair growth or permanently stop future hair loss.
Who may benefit from MicroPen EVO scalp treatments?
Scalp microneedling may be considered for men and women experiencing certain forms of gradual hair thinning, including male or female pattern hair loss. It may be especially appropriate for patients who still have active hair follicles within the treatment area and want to complement another recommended hair-restoration treatment.
Not every type of hair loss should be treated with microneedling. Sudden shedding, patchy hair loss, scarring alopecia and hair loss caused by an infection, inflammatory scalp condition, medication, nutritional deficiency or underlying medical issue may require a different approach.
Before beginning treatment, your provider will examine your scalp, review your medical history and discuss your symptoms and goals. Additional evaluation or testing may be recommended to identify the cause of your hair loss.
What can I expect during treatment?
Before treatment begins, the hair is separated to provide access to the targeted areas of the scalp. The MicroPen EVO device is then passed across the treatment area at a depth selected for your individual needs.
Patients may feel vibration, pressure, scratching or mild discomfort during the procedure. Temporary redness, tenderness, warmth, dryness, itching, mild swelling or pinpoint bleeding may occur afterward. These effects are generally temporary and should improve as the scalp heals.
Your provider will give you individualized aftercare instructions, including guidance about washing your hair, applying hair products, exercising, sun exposure and resuming any topical hair-loss treatments.
How many treatments will I need?
Scalp microneedling is generally performed as a series of treatments rather than as a one-time procedure. The number and frequency of sessions will depend on the cause and extent of your hair thinning, your overall treatment plan and how your scalp responds.
Because hair grows in cycles, changes occur gradually. It may take several months before improvements in shedding, density, thickness or scalp coverage become noticeable. Maintenance treatments may be recommended to help support continued results.
Individual outcomes vary, and some patients may experience little or no visible improvement.
Is MicroPen EVO scalp microneedling covered by insurance?
MicroPen EVO microneedling for the scalp is considered an elective cosmetic treatment and is not eligible for health insurance coverage. Payment is due at the time of treatment.
