How is PRP obtained and processed?
A small amount of blood is drawn from your arm and placed into a centrifuge, which separates the blood into its different components. The platelet-rich plasma is then carefully collected and prepared for treatment.
Once the PRP has been processed, a medical provider uses a small needle to inject it directly into targeted areas of the scalp. The platelets contain naturally occurring growth factors that may help support the activity of existing hair follicles, encourage healthier growth and improve the appearance of thinning hair.
Because PRP is prepared from your own blood, the treatment does not involve synthetic growth factors or donor material.
Who may benefit from scalp PRP injections?
PRP may be recommended for men and women experiencing certain forms of hair thinning, including male or female pattern hair loss. It may be used on its own or as part of a more comprehensive hair-restoration plan.
Hair loss can have many potential causes and not every type of hair loss will respond to PRP. Before treatment, a medical provider will evaluate your scalp, discuss your medical history and determine whether PRP is an appropriate option for you. Additional testing or medical treatment may be recommended when an underlying health condition, nutritional deficiency, medication or inflammatory scalp disorder could be contributing to hair loss.
What can I expect during treatment?
The PRP is injected throughout the areas of the scalp being treated. Patients may feel pressure, pinching or brief discomfort during the injections. Your provider may use measures to help make the procedure more comfortable.
Temporary tenderness, redness, swelling, bruising or pinpoint bleeding may occur at the injection sites. Most patients can return to their normal routine shortly after treatment, although individualized aftercare instructions will be provided.
How many treatments will I need?
PRP is generally performed as a series of treatments rather than as a one-time procedure. Your recommended schedule will depend on the type and extent of your hair loss, your treatment goals and how your scalp responds.
Results develop gradually as the hair moves through its natural growth cycle. Some patients may first notice reduced shedding, followed by improvements in the thickness, density or overall appearance of their hair. Maintenance treatments may be recommended to help support continued results.
Individual outcomes vary and PRP cannot guarantee new hair growth or permanently stop future hair loss.
Is scalp PRP covered by insurance?
PRP injections for the scalp are considered an elective cosmetic treatment and are not eligible for health insurance coverage. Payment is due at the time of treatment. Our team can discuss treatment pricing, recommended sessions and available payment or financing options during your consultation.
